This past Monday marked thirty days since we officially launched the Metro Detroit Black Business Alliance.
What a journey we have embarked on! We have been overwhelmed with support from Black businesses, corporations, government partners and allies from around the Metro Detroit area.
I wanted to also give a thank you to early partners that have joined TCF in supporting MDBBA such as the United Way, the Detroit Pistons and many others.
What has been most interesting to me are the conversations that I have had with Black businesses owners. From a gym owner in Pontiac, to a couple that owns a deli shop in Warren, Black businesses have been enthusiastic about this new organization. Our early members are located across the Metro Detroit area and the industries are varied, but our numbers are showing that the bulk of our members are small Black owned businesses .
One week before our announcement, Goldman Sachs issued a report on Black-womenomics. It talks about the wealth gap for Black women in America. Startling facts indeed; and once more it highlighted the wealth gap for Black families, stating that the median Black household owns nearly 90% less wealth than the median white household. This gap is heartbreaking and it is the reason the MDBBA exists. We see our role in this world, as doing our part to close that 90% gap for Black families by helping Black businesses access critical resources.
We know that we have to help bridge the gap for capital access for our businesses. Bridging that gap will come in a number of forms through our new Capital Connect program. We are excited to launch this program today with two announcements.
First, in coordination with Detroit Means Business, we will provide access and support to businesses that want to apply for PPP. Interested businesses should visit www.mdbba.com to apply for direct 1:1 assistance.
Secondly, next Monday April 26, 2021, we will have a FREE event in collaboration with our partners at TCF called Breakthrough Banking, where we will talk to businesses about accessing the resources TCF has set aside for women and minority owned businesses.
We have not even scratched the surface of the unique needs of our community, but our commitment is unwavering and we are committed to rolling up our sleeves and getting to work.
It will take all of us to close this wealth gap. If you are interested in rolling up your sleeves to do this work with us, send me an email. Lets do it together.
